It Rocks! Rockstall Nature Preserve near Hocking Hills

Learn more about this hidden gem of the Hocking Hills region

Located on the grounds of Camp Akita, Rockstall Nature Preserve is a Hocking Hills hidden gem that is off-the-beaten-path compared to busier hiking areas within the Hocking Hills State Park.

Rockstall Nature Preserve is a short drive from Logan, making it very easy to explore while in the region. The trail is just over 1 mile long.

Things to know about visitng Rockstall Nature Preserve

As previously mentioned, Rockstall is not part of the Hocking Hills State Park. It is open everyday from 9-5 and parking is limited.

The trail is a loop. Give yourself 45 minutes at a minimum. We visited with family that had been before, and they advised us to follow the trail straight down the stairs towards the falls (do not veer to the right). We came back this way, too, and avoided walking along the gorge with our young children.

The trail without doing the rim walk is moderately difficult. Our older kids are 6-12, and I felt safe letting them walk without holding my hand. However, our children are experienced hikers. We carried our baby in the Lille baby carrier and it worked well.

After descending the staircase, make sure you visit the cave, which is located along the rim wall to your right.

The Rockstall waterfall is further down on the left. This is a great area for kids to play in drier seasons. Unfortunately, the waterfall did not have one drop of water when we visited at the end of a dry summer. If you’re hoping to see a robust waterfall, I’d plan a spring visit, and winter may be magical with ice formations.

If you are planning an off-season hike, the stairs down to the falls are not protected by any weather stripping or chicken wire. This would be very slippery when wet or ice-covered.
